Lewinsky and Clinton met each other sometime in 1995. Lewinsky was working at the White House as an intern, and reportedly, much of her interactions with Clinton happened in the Oval Office when she had to deliver documents to him.

Over the course of about two years, the two of them engaged in various sexual acts together despite the fact that Clinton was married.

Their relationship went public in 1998 after Lewinsky shared details about it with her co-worker Linda Tripp. At the time, Lewinsky had already been transferred to work at the Pentagon, so her affair with Clinton was in the past. However, the press went crazy for the story and news of Clinton's affair became front-page news everywhere.

Clinton denied having a "sexual relationship" with Lewinsky in his sworn deposition, and he was ultimately charged with perjury.

Monica Lewinsky's life after the scandal

After the scandal and Clinton's impeachment trials, Lewinsky lived life as an infamous celebrity. She became a pop culture icon, though Lewinsky did not like the attention, calling it an "avalanche of pain and humiliation."

Lewinsky did try to make use of her fame to make money, however. In the late 1990's and early 2000s, she launched a line of handbags, had endorsement deals with Jenny Craig, and even made appearances on TV shows likeSaturday Night Live andThe View.

Yet, by the mid-2000s, Lewinsky tried to move herself out of the public eye. She went back to school and enrolled at the London School of Economics, where she eventually graduated with a master's degree.

Lewinsky's name is forever linked to the scandal, so she has admitted that it can be hard at times for her to get a job. She shared that she had thought about changing her name to escape it all, but these days, she is glad that she did not do that.

She told John Oliver: "I'm not proud of all of the choices I've made in my life, but I'm proud of the person I am. As hard as it has been to have that last name sometimes and the pain that I have felt of what it's meant for other people in my family who have that last name, I am glad I didn't change it."

These days, Lewinsky spends a lot of time working on anti-bullying causes. She gave a Ted Talk in 2015 about her experience being bullied online and the "culture of humiliation."

Lewinsky has also given a lot of support to the #MeToo movement, citing her affair as an "abuse of power" by someone in a high position.
